Let us think about infants; what do they need? They need observant adults who respond to their signals and needs quickly but calmly. They need teachers to treat them gently, handle them with care and respect and understand their individuality. They need an environment which caters for their own special routine, one that does not force them to change their routine to that of the majority. They need adults to handle them in a calm and caring way and to be respectful at all times. We confidently acknowledge that we accomplish these goals every day.
In our infant nursery we have two regular care giving teachers who are responsible for almost all of the care that your infant will receive. This enables your baby, the teacher and you the parent to build reciprocal trusting and loving relationships and as our early childhood curriculum Te Whᾱriki says this happens in ‘an environment where they are safe from harm’.
If you are a breast feeding mother we will support you to continue this most important and fundamental relationship at the centre. We are proud participants of ‘ E KAI anywhere, anytime breast feeding friendly community environments initiative’.
Even though your infant may not be independently mobile we ensure that there are numerous opportunities throughout the day for him or her to experience a variety of settings. Playthings are available which will encourage your child to turn and look, stretch and grasp. There is a safe place to lie, to learn how to roll and to crawl. Curiosity is a motivator for physical activity so playthings are available in the nursery which encourage pushing and pulling, twisting and turning with minimal adult assistance. We provide infant's with support and encouragement, freedom of movement to practice and perfect their skill at their own pace. We pride ourselves on paying careful attention to your infant's developing needs.
